Day 11: Negreira to Olveiroa

After a days rest in the rain, I was back on the road with 35km and 925m elevation.

There wasn’t any breakfast at the place I stayed overnight in Negreira, so after a shower and packing my stuff, I was on my way by 8.30. Leaving town, I didn’t find anywhere to stop for breakfast. Leaving the town through a gateway that was probably part of a wall that surrounded the old part of town at some point, the countryside was covered in low lying cloud. I passed a two sided status, representing a man emigrating on the one side and the family trying to hold him back on the other side.

The paths were fairly wet after the 44mm of rain yesterday, and being covered with twigs and leaves, I had to be careful as it was a bit slippery. The day started upwards, but the gradients were low, so it wasn’t super hard work. Soon I was looking down on the low lying cloud. It was sunny but cold, and I was wearing both my fleece tops.

I stopped at the first place that was open, after 8km in Fielato and had a toasted sandwich and coffee for my breakfast. I continued along backroads and trails for the rest of the day, passing through very small villages, without services, and many small farms. We are really in the middle of nowhere out here, with very few cars – although at one point, I did see the same delivery lorry three times within an hour.

It was up and down small hills most of the day, with one fairly steep climb towards Mount Aro, up to about 500m, but it was worth the climb with great views. Throughout the days, there were some great views over the very green countryside and at one point, towards a large lake. The sun was out for the most part, but when it disappeared behind the clouds, it got fairly chilly.

It was a really nice days walking, as I hope the many pictures show.

I reached Olveira and the pension I am staying at 4.30pm. The lady at reception told me that both of the village’s restaurants were closed today – it happened only one or twice a year, so I was unlucky. She offered that her husband would drive me the 4km to the nearest restaurant, wait for me to eat and drive me back. I offered to pay, but he would not have any of it. What a service. The restaurant opened at 8pm, so I had a few hours to take a shower, write this and rest.
