Lighthouse Way Malpica to A Coruna Spain Sticky

Day 13: Malpica to Arnados

Today I start a 2-day walk between Malpica and A Coruna airport i northern Spain. The last time I was in Malpica was the autumn 2023 after completing the Lighthouse Way from Finisterra (Stage 2 on my walk to Rome). Back then, I took a bus to A Coruna and flew home. In Spring 2024, I walked between Santander and A Coruna airport. The next two days I will close the gap, taking a walk where it is very difficult to find any information, let alone a pre-defined trail. So I am excited to see what the two days bring.

I caught the 8.40 bus from Cee to Carballo, waited an hour and connected to Malpica. Last time I visited Malpica I didn’t see much as I had to take a bus 30 minutes after I arrived. This time I took a short walk around the port before setting off up the steep hill out of Malpica, with great views of the town from the top of the hill. It was already 12 o clock.

A quiet road led to the first dirt track, which I had some trouble finding, taking me through the forest, high above the coast. I passed a couple of very small villages still high above the coast, before passing O Cean’s overgrown and not used football pitch where I made a left turn, following the path downhill towards the coast and the San Miro beach.

It was a short walk today, only 15km, but over 500m elevation, so it was a bit up and down, but nothing steep. From the beach, the path stayed close to the coastline, with nice views in both directions along the coast. It was a mix of well kept dirt tracks and small back country roads. It was downhill into Arnados, where I arrived around 4pm. There were great views of the town  and its long and sandy beach. It was 15 degrees and the beach was empty.

I stayed at the Nautico de Razo hostel, which was new and very nice and the owner very helpful. I walked along the beach and had dinner at the local bar, which was busy with many locals.

A really nice and pleasant day, which I hope the photos also show. Well worth the walk.
